One of the greatest obstacles to enjoying your time in SL is, indeed, coming up with the Second Life money, or Lindens, needed to buy nearly everything you would like to have access to in-world. Wether you can afford to pony up the “Linden tax” to play though, is actually besides the point because, as many others have discovered, it’s not only possible to make money IN-GAME, but maybe even more than you currently make at work.

As far fetched as that sounds, that’s exactly what citizens in SL are doing. With over $7 million in exchange occurring in 2007 alone (yeah, no joke), all that money has to go SOMEWHERE. And it absolutely is. Not only are people making and spending a lot of money, but that money can be exchanged into real-word currency at anytime (or visa-versa).

Here’s a snippet from a recent feature from slentre.com:

“Initially, I had no idea of starting a business but very rapidly I perceived a gap in the market - although there were dozens of magazines and blogs covering fashion, there was nothing for the homes and gardens market. So I started one, “I didn’t actually put much seed capital in, except in terms of time, and very rapidly, I paid my costs from the business. When I started six months earlier, I had moved from a full-time job to a part-time one, and was running my own small web development company in real life. So that company’s focus shifted from creating websites to Second Life consultancy and mentoring charities into SL – and, of course, building a media …erm… empire.”

You see, SL is a new exciting economy, not just a game. It’s like a new city that has attracted a huge populous, all with unmet wants and needs that you can fill.

Even if you don’t think you are the entrepreneurial type, there are still other ways to bring home the bacon on Second Life. How about a highly paid virtual career? Speakers, shop workers, musicians, and fashion models… it’s all there. And some of them are making a good chunk of change. If you favor seedier sorts of work… well, let’s just say you won’t be left out in the dark.

How about investing? You can buy low and sell high with unique items on the market. You can flip properties and be involved in realty. You can finance another entrepreneur in exchange for a share in the profits.

Second Life is a real place when it comes to money. It’s all about imagination, desire, and know-how. In his book, Second Life: The Ultimate Guide to Riches, Chris Jones teaches the most profitable ways to create income in SL, wether you are looking for a little more to spend on outfits, or wether you want to replace your real-world income! It’s a fascinating world to be sure, and if you’ve ever dreamed of making a living playing games… Second Life money may be what you’ve been looking for!
